About This Project

The Art of Busking

07-16.06.2014

Buskers or street performers are a viable tool for rejuvenating public spaces. Busking can bring a cultural asset to the cities. Buskers prompt social interaction on the street level, create intimacy and allow people feel familiar and safe. They also provide one of the few forms of live entertainment that low-income citizens can access and enjoy. Busking is spontaneous, unpredictable and at the same time inclusive.

Jugend- & Kulturprojekt e.V. dedicated to performing arts has always been inspired by busking and its impact on the society. For this reason, we implemented the Art of Busking project, a multilateral youth exchange which took place within the framework of Thessaloniki 2014: European Youth Capital involving young amateur and professional artists and performers from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania and Spain with the aim of sharing their knowledge and experiences regarding street performing arts with the local community of Thessaloniki and raising awareness about the impact of busking on the society.

The daily activities were based on the principles of non-formal education. In workshops, performing activities and rehearsals the participants were encouraged to unfold their creative and artistic skills, develop their team spirit and work collaboratively on a common mission: to promote busking through a street parade that took place on the 13th of June 2014 and through the street performance “Great Wheel” which took place on the 14th of June 2014. The Great Wheel was a multidimensional performance based on dance, circus arts, theatre, fire performing, juggling and acrobatics that celebrates life and nature and promotes solidarity, unity and peace. The performance was based on dance.
