By dealing with the ‘other’, meaning in this case the Muslim or the Jew, through cultural interaction and by producing educational videos regarding the cultural and social differences and similarities between Muslims, Jews and Christians explaining and promoting the values of the European Union, the project “Shoot.Edit.Learn & Connect” aims to tackle the fear and racism that can be found around us. This will be achieved via formal, non-formal and informal education, changing hearts and minds. By demonstrating the common things that make us up -the wishes, hopes and hobbies that people of both the Jewish and the Muslim faith have in common with their other Christian German neighbours- we want to fight anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

The project strives to educate the new coming members of the Dresdner community -the refugees- in order to assist them integrate themselves better and not fall into a self-perpetuating cycle of misunderstandings and hatred. By educating them about EU values, rights and responsibilities, the project aspires that the newcomers will also take their first steps in understanding how to perceive our Basic Human Rights promoting understanding between religions.

We believe that Education and Comprehension lead to Understanding and the lessening of harassment and thus, to Integration.

The project aspires to produce educational videos that relate to anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. The first video is about the life stories of mainly young people; a young Muslim, a young Jew and a young Christian German which are going to be recorded. They are going to talk about their culture, religion, hobbies, lifestyle and prejudices. They are going to express their hopes and dreams and share their concerns and fears. These young people

can express themselves not only through words but through any form they wish to e.g. through music, visual, street and performing arts, sport, cooking, crafts etc. so that creativity and self-expression are encouraged.

The second video is about educating the refugees in a comprehensive way as well as exchanging opinions and viewpoints about certain terms and values of the European Union. The main characters of the video are going to be refugees who are going to speak about the European Union’s Rights and Freedoms, such as their rights and their responsibilities are as immigrants in the EU. Discussions regarding ‘Gender Equality’ and what it means to them are going to follow as well about the ‘Freedom of Religion’ and what it means to them. Moreover, the topic about the ‘Right to Life’ is going to be discussed and analysed. The fore mentioned terms and values are going first to be described and explained by an expert by giving some comprehensible examples and then the expert is going to start a conversation about these topics with the refugees.

The project was implemented with help of Kulturbüro Sachsen e.V, Jüdische Gemeinde zu Dresden, Ausländerrat Dresden e.V. und HELLERAU – Europäisches Zentrum der Künste

This project has been funded through the WORDS INTO ACTION programme of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
