Echoes in Ink [2025]

About This Project

Echoes in Ink

The Art of Remembrance

Project duration: April 2025 – December 2025

Project overview:

‘Echoes in Ink – The Art of Remembrance’ is an interdisciplinary art and education project that gives young people creative access to Jewish history and encourages them to engage with the persecution of Jews during the Nazi era.

At a time when anti-Semitic attacks are on the rise, historical narratives are being forgotten or politically exploited, new forms of remembrance are needed: participatory, visual and true to life. ‘Echoes in Ink’ responds to this need by combining artistic expression with historical education, thereby creating new perspectives on the culture of remembrance.

The focus is on biographical research into Jewish life stories before, during and after the Shoah. Based on this research, young participants develop their own comic narratives under professional guidance, in which they grapple with questions of historical responsibility, continuities of discrimination and their own scope for action.

The project is divided into interactive memorial tours, creative workshops, thematic work sessions and individual mentoring. The creative process culminates in the design of the participants’ own graphic novels – artistic testimonies that are made publicly visible in exhibitions, readings and digital formats.

‘Echoes in Ink’ is implemented by the Jugend- & Kulturprojekt e. V. in close cooperation with memorial sites, artists and experts from the fields of education, comic art and history.

Target groups of the ECHOES IN INK project:

We are aimed at young people who want to actively engage with history and society – regardless of their prior knowledge.

The focus is on:

  • Art and teacher training students
  • Young people (aged 15–25) interested in history and culture
  • Upper secondary school students
  • Young people from Jewish communities
  • Young artists interested in comics, illustration and storytelling

Activities of the ECHOES IN INK project:

The project is divided into several phases that build on each other and encourage both reflection and creative implementation:

  • Memorial tours & biographical research: Participants explore places of Jewish life in cooperation with local memorial sites and learn more about individual fates.
  • Creative workshops & impulse sessions: Artists, historians and educators provide insights into graphic storytelling, remembrance culture and the ethical dimensions of historical representation.
  • Five thematic working sessions: In guided group or individual work phases, participants develop their own comic stories – from the initial idea to the storyboard to the final implementation.
  • Individual support and feedback: Mentors from the fields of art and education are on hand to advise and assist with research, narration and graphic implementation.
  • Public presentation and exhibition: The resulting works will be exhibited and made available on digital platforms, accompanied by dialogue events with the public.

Objectives of the ECHOES IN INK project:

With this project, we are pursuing several objectives on a personal, social and artistic level:

  • Actively shaping memory: Young people learn to process historical experiences creatively and find their own forms of expression.
  • Strengthening cultural education: By combining historical and political education with art and media literacy.
  • Promoting diversity of perspectives: The biographies of Jewish people are at the centre of the project – as part of a diverse culture of remembrance.
  • Empowerment through art: Participants are encouraged to share their perspectives, ask questions and become visible.

Results of the ECHOES IN INK project:

The project will result in a series of artistic graphic novels and short comics that visually translate the results of the research and reflections.

  • Launch event at the KulturCentrale in Dresden
  • Exhibition of the works at the Full Moon Gallery in Dresden
  • Reading at the KulturCentrale in Dresden
  • E-book with the graphic novels
